Dan Sorensen

Dan SorensenDan Sorensen was born and raised in Northern California, but after seven years has come to call Reno his home. Above all, he prizes good conversation, the willingness to take chances and make mistakes, and the right bottle of wine for the right occasion. As an undergraduate, Dan majored in philosophy at UC Berkeley. He then came to UNR and received an MA in the subject. After Reno, Dan left for Illinois to pursue a doctorate in political theory, but soon left after discovering the life of research kept him from his true desire--teaching and talking about the examined life. Now back in Reno, he makes his living teaching philosophy and the humanities around town. Dan's teaching interests lie in Continental philosophy (in particular, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and phenomenology) and political theory (lately, opinion and judgment). Dan is working on a theory of factual truth that draws from the works of Arendt, Lippmann, and Orwell. By attending the RSJ program, Dan looks forward to learning about and discussing new forms of journalistic practice made possible by new media. As an aspiring journalist, Dan thinks the program will help make him a timely reporter. In his spare time, Dan enjoys taking day trips to Tahoe, thinking about and practicing journalism as forms of converssation, and entertaining friends with his wife.
